An autoclave’s chamber serves to sterilize medical instruments through heating them up over the boiling point. For example, many clinics have tabletop autoclaves, which are about the same size as a microwave oven. On the other hand, hospitals typically utilize larger autoclaves. They’re often set in a hospital’s central sterile services area. Autoclaves are able to process multiple instruments in one sterilizing cycle. This makes them essential for meeting the continual demand for sterilized equipment.

In addition to hospitals, autoclaves are important for veterinarian practices, dental offices and many other locations.

Pressurized steam is what autoclaves use to sterilize equipment. Duration, temperature, steam and pressure are the essential parameters for effective sterilization. The length of time and temperature for sterilization is based on the variety of equipment. For instance, utilizing higher temps to sterilize equipment requires less time. A common temperature for sterilizing is approximately 120 to 132 Celsius. For steam to get to that range it must flow into the unit’s chamber at a pressure that’s higher than standard atmosphere pressures.

Comparable to a pressure cooker, steam autoclaves do their job quickly and efficiently. Their temperature and distinctive shape makes it easier for autoclaves to contain heat for a long period. Also, autoclaves are able to effectively penetrate every piece of medical equipment. The chambers of an autoclave are typically cylindrical. That shape is good for handling the high pressure it takes for an effective sterilizing process. For safety purposes, there is an external lock as well as a safety valve. They serve to prevent the unit’s pressure from rising too high.

After closing the autoclave’s sterilizer chamber a vacuum pump draws out all the air from within the unit. Or, it forces the air out by pumping steam in. On each autoclave there’s a thermometer waiting for the thermal point of 268-273 Fahrenheit. When the thermometer reaches that point, the unit starts the timer. During the sterilization process, steam continuously enters the autoclave to destroy all hazardous microorganisms. After the necessary time for sterilization elapses, the chamber exhausts the steam and pressure. Subsequently, the device allows the door to open up so the content can cool and dry.
